Second-order statistics of natural images

چکیده
Assuming adaptation of the visual cortex to its environment, we analyse the invariance found in natural images to explain the selective response of visual cortical neurons. We argue that the invariant structure of images can be formally expressed by dot-products. Utilizing the specific structure of the proposed model we show how non-linear functions can be learned efficiently from natural images. In addition to localized edge detectors we found model neurons that respond to changes in texture and cells that detect edge curvature. The analysis suggests new types of features neurons in primary visual cortex may be selective to.

The Statistical Properties of Local Log-Contrast in Natural Images
The study of natural image statistics considers the statistical properties of large collections of images from natural scenes, and has applications in image processing, computer vision, and visual computational neuroscience. In the past, a major focus in the field of natural image statistics have been the statistics of outputs of linear filters. Recently, attention has been turning to nonlinear...
متن کاملSecond-Order Statistical Texture Representation of Asphalt Pavement Distress Images Based on Local Binary Pattern in Spatial and Wavelet Domain
Assessment of pavement distresses is one of the important parts of pavement management systems to adopt the most effective road maintenance strategy. In the last decade, extensive studies have been done to develop automated systems for pavement distress processing based on machine vision techniques. One of the most important structural components of computer vision is the feature extraction met...
متن کاملWhat the statistics of natural images tell us about visual coding
Why does the mammalian visual system represent information as it does? If we assume that visual systems have evolved to cope witi the natural environment then we might expect the coding properties of the visual system to be related to the statistical structure of our environment. Indeed, images of the natunl environment do not have random statistics. The first-order statistics (e.g., distriburi...
متن کاملStatistical approaches to image and scene manipulation
The field of visual perception aims to study the human visual system. It is recognized that in order to understand a system, it is important to understand its input. This has led to the sub-field of natural image statistics, which tries to understand images in statistical terms. Images’ statistical properties are usually studied by collecting a number of such images in an ensemble and computing...
متن کاملRole of second- and third-order statistics in the discriminability of natural images
Several studies of natural-image statistics have concluded that the majority of structural image information is represented in the Fourier domain not by the power spectrum, which can be modeled with a power function of spatial frequency, but by the phase spectrum. Psychophysical experiments are described in which human observers were required to discriminate between visual stimuli differing onl...
متن کاملSeparation of non - stationary natural signals
Most approaches to the problem of source separation use the assumption of statistical independence. To capture statistical independence higher order statistics are required. In this chapter we will demonstrate how higher order criteria, such as maximum kurtosis, arise naturally from the property of non-stationarity. We will also show that source separation of non-stationary signals can be based...
